Energy transformation on the roof

"Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and companies are playing an important pioneering role in this," says Jörg Pohl, Managing Director at baier & michels (b&m), adding: "Running a business sustainably is becoming a social obligation that our parent company, the Würth Group, is meeting with ambitious targets. We at b&m support this path and at the same time make our contribution, which includes ecological approaches towards electricity consumption."

To this end, baier & michels is increasingly focusing on the use of solar cells and the conversion of sunlight into electrical energy at its corporate headquarters in Ober-Ramstadt in southern Hessen. Since March 2019, a photovoltaic (PV) system has been in operation on the roof of one of the factory halls; the 757 modules cover an area of around 1,400 m²; under ideal solar conditions, they can generate 103,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of solar power per year. “With the solar intensity in Ober-Ramstadt, we currently produce more than 80,000 kWh, which corresponds to about twelve percent of our electricity consumption,” explains Steffen Redlingshöfer, Head of Quality and responsible for the topic of environment, health and safety at b&m.
